Out Bound Training Programme

The out bound training programme organized by our youth unit was held on the 24th & 25th of February at Kawdupelella Sinhala Vidyalaya at Matale with the participation of 33 youths representing various ethnic and religious groups in the district of Kandy.

Active Resource contribution was rendered by the Disaster Management Centre, Kandy and the Life Saving Swimmers group of Dambulla Police Station.

Social Cohesion between Two Ethnic Groups

The youth unit of the 'SETIK' organization of Kandy has been formed under the theme of 'violent free youth group' accordingly, the central province is combined with Buddhists, Hindus, Christians and Muslims of the ethnic groups of Sinhala, Tamil and Muslims.  The youth group in the diocese of Kandy is engaged with the youth group of 'EHED' organization in the diocese of Batticaloa to create peace and reconciliation among the youths in the country.  So, a group of 55 youths in Kandy district joined for an exposure programme with the youths of Batticaloa on the 1st and 2nd of March 2013.

One of the main features of this exposure programme is the Blood donation made to the blood bank in Batticaloa Hospital.  The doctor in-charge of the hospital had told the visitors that they do not get sufficient blood to their blood bank.  He had also told that the community does not show any interest to donate blood due to their mentality with the war.

At the beginning of this programme, the Bishop of Batticaloa, stated that programmes like blood donation could be utilized to create peace and reconciliation in the multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society.

At this blood donation camp, 33 pints of blood was donated by the guests while the hosts donated 54 pints of blood.  A youth of Batticaloa commenting on this programme said the fear and reluctance of donating blood has been removed with this programme.

Residential Computer Course

 

 

This training programme was held at the SETIK Auditorium, continuously for seven days, for which 24 youths (Sinhala & Tamil) participated.

The main objective of this training course is to provide an opportunity to the children of the poverty stricken families in the rural and plantation areas to enhance their computer knowledge, to enable them to secure suitable employment.

This training programme was not restricted only for computer field, this includes leadership, peace, unity and extra curricular activities.

This programme provided a good opportunity to the participants to improve inter-ethnic. inter-religious and inter-cultural harmony.

SEMINARS ON DISASTER MANAGEMENT

Seminars on Disaster Management, organized by our Youth unit, were conducted at the SETIK Auditorium, Kandy and SETIK Centre, Hatton on 19th & 20th and 25th & 26th January, respectively, under the following themes.

• Difference between hazards and disasters
• Identifying a disaster
• Classification of disaster
• Significance of team spirit in disaster situation
• Disaster situations and defensive methods to be taken

The participants were enlightened about Lightening, Severe Drought, Landslides, Sudden Inflammation and Tsunami situations.

There were 34 participants for the seminar in Kandy and 38 participants for the seminar in Hatton.  A disaster management group with 25 youths was formed from the seminar in Kandy.

Mr. Ranaweera, the Director, Disaster Management Centre, Kandy and Mr. Amarasinghe Kalaldora of our Training unit functioned as Resource Persons at the Seminar in Kandy while Mr. Sivalingam from the Disaster Management Centre, Nuwara Eliya and Mr. Arulnesaraja of our organization, functioned as Resource persons at the Seminar in Hatton.

Ayurvedic Medical Clinic and Eye Clinic

The medical clinics organized jointly by our youth unit and the youth group of Nagalawewa were held at the Nagalawewa community hall on the 10th of October 2012.

This programme was conducted in view of the World Elders' Day.  This was highly praised by the people of this area.

When the elderly parents are being left out at the homes for the elders by some of the youth, without discharging their duties towards parents, this worthy and virtuous act of the youth unit of SETIK together with the Nagalawewa youth, was highly praised and appreciated by the people.

About 150 people received ayurvedic treatment from the ayurvedic medical officers of the ayurvedic hospital, Dambulla.

Spectacles were supplied to 56 people at concessionary rates from the eye clinic.  Three patients were referred for eye operation for removal of their cataracts free of charge.

This can be described as a consolidation to Nagalawewa youth group for their violent free journey towards sustainable development with the youth unit of SETIK.

Residential Computer Training Programme

The residential computer training programme on MS Office 2007 was successfully conducted from 7-13 October 2012 at the SETIK Auditorium.  The resource contribution was provided by Mr. S. Wasantha.  23 youth from the remote, poverty stricken families in the plantation areas and the samoordhy recipients families in the rural areas took part in this programme.  These youth also had the opportunities to take part in various programmes during their stay.

 

In addition to computer literacy, they also gained a good knowledge in leadership traits and virtuous attitudes.  Both Sinhalese and  Tamil youth took part in this programme which helped them to improve their cordial relationship.  Also, this was a good opportunity to learn each others languages.

At the conclusion of this programme, they were so close and unable to seperate from each other, as separation from the beloved once was a suffering for them.  This was a great strength for the formation of a violent free youth group.

Youth Day Seminar 2012

The commemoration of the international youth day, was conducted as a seminar at St. Benedict's College, Ampitiya with the participation of 160 youth leaders from the remote rural and plantation areas in the districts of Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya and the youth groups in the parishes.

In his address to the youths, Rev. Fr. Camillus D. Jansz, the Director of our organization, said that this seminar immensely provide guidance to enhance the power of youth and self-reliance to over come the challenges in life.  He also said that he was delighted to see a devoted and dedicated youth group, who are committed to serve the society.

This seminar was greatly contributed to the youth to dispose their hidden talents and skills, to enhance their team spirit, to give proper respect to the views and opinions of others, to obey their leadership and improve virtuous qualities.

Resource contribution to this seminar was provided by Mr. J. Benedict, who enlighten the youth of their duties and social responsibilities.  Mr. Upali Dharmakeerthi, the project coordinator and Mr. A.C.S.Crooz, the programme coordinator also addressed at this seminar.

At the conclusion, the youths pledged to devote for the formation of a righteous and virtuous society.

Cordaid Funding Partners Visit

The successes, failures, obstacles and challenges of the youth activities carried out in Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts during the last two years were deeply analyzed under the "Non Violent Youth for Sustainable Development".

The topics of "how our future activities be planned?" and "how it should be changed" were also deeply discussed.

Mr. Jan Nielen of Cordaid organization, Rev. Fr. Director, Administrative Manager, Finance Officer, Project Coordinator and the members of the Youth unit participated at this discussion.

Blood Donation Campaign

‘SETIK’ Organization has been rendering so many devoted services for the promotion and well being of the youth in the rural and plantation areas in the Central Province for the past several years. At present the youth in these areas are engaged in development activities giving special priority according their needs and requirements.

As a part of these activities, a blood donation campaign was organized by the youth of Gragonhill estate, at Sri Sudarmarama Viharaya, Alawathugoda on the 25th of February 2012 under the theme “Let us save the life by donating a drop of blood”. By organizing this event, the youths have proved that they could render a virtuous service to the humanity by donating blood. 62 youths took part in this programme and 62 pints of blood was donated.

Rev. Fr. Desmond ‘SETIK’ Co-ordinator - Matale District, the Chief Incumbent of Alawathugoda Buddhist temple, The Chief Maulavi Imam of the Jumma Mosque of Alawathugoda and the Hindu Kurukkal of the Kovil Represented all four religions. The police inspector of Alawathugoda Police, Chairman Pradeshiya Sabhawa and members, Members of Three Wheeler’s Union and Grama Niladhari were also present on this occasion.

This event was jointly organized by the president of the Matale District Steering Committee and other youth committees with the assistance of the officers attached to the Blood Bank at Matale hospital where every ethnic, race and religious people were gathered without any difference.

Youth Day Celebrations 2011

The above celebration organized by the Youth unit, was held at the ‘SETIK’ auditorium on the 24th of September 2011. As a committed organization for Justice Peace Human Development Human Rights, we take keen interest in the welfare of the Youth and to create a society without any ethnic and religious discrimination.
The youth day was celebrated in a grand scale with the theme of “let us get together and lead the youth for sustainable development through non-violence and thereby lead them for a virtuous theme.
Rev. Fr. Camillus D. Jansz, Director of our organization was the Chief Guest. Rev. Fr. Roy Clarence, Director of the Catholic Migrants’ Commission was the guest speaker of this commemoration. Mr. N. C. Gregory, Manager Administration and all the staff members had been present on this occasion. Over 300 youth (boys and girls) representing various fields in the central province were also present at this ceremony.
This programme was conducted by the above youth leaders. Awarding of certificates to the youths, who took part in the various programmes i.e. Leadership Training/ First Aid Training/ Computer Training etc., was also took place on this occasion.

Cultural Pageant and Welcoming Ceremony of Rev. Fr. George Sigamoney, the National Director

The annual Certificate Awarding Ceremony pertaining to various courses, competitions and seminars and the welcoming ceremony of the former Director of SETIK and the present National Director, Rev. Fr. George Sigamoney, was held at the SETIK auditorium in a grand manner on the 15th May 2010.

About 300 youths (Males & Females) in the Central Province who secured the places in Computer Courses, Cultural Programmes, Drama Competitions, Art Exhibitions, Oratorical Contests and various other programmes were awarded the certificates.

The youths (Males & Females) by using their talents, skills and knowledge at our programmes conducted in their areas, presented various cultural performances to entertain the crowd. Further, a programme ‘power point presentation’ was also presented in honour of the services rendered by the Rev. Father during his service as the Director of SETIK organization. The certificate award ceremony was held by Rev. Fr. George Sigamoney, the National Director of Caritas Sri Lanka, Rev. Fr. Camillus D. Jansz, the Director of Caritas Kandy (SETIK), Rev. Fathers of Kandy Diocese, Rev. Sisters and other invitees.

The programme which commenced at 9.00 a.m. was concluded at 1.00 p.m.

“Wesak Mal Dansala” (Free distribution of flowers)

Each year as an organization Setik celbrates the special days of all religious in various ways. The youth groups as well as the children’s groups of Setik organized a “Wesak Mal Dansala” (Free distribution of flowers) this year to celebrate the Wesak Full Moon Poya Day in a meaningful way. Not only Buddhists who celebrate this Poya Day but also Catholics, Hindus and Muslims actively took part in this programme which held on the 1st May 2007. The flowers were collected the day before from the Matale areas. The flowers were distributed freely to the worshippers who came to the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy. The programme started at 10.00 a.m and went on till noon.
